03 July 2026, MOIG was invited to participate in the fourth meeting of the National Committee, which was held at the headquarters of the National Agency for Environmental Protection (ANPE) in Tunis.
The meeting, chaired by the Minister of Environment, aimed to review the status of the Russian LNG carrier Arctic Metgaz and to formulate the necessary recommendations.
The ANPE representative presented a chronological overview of the incident that occurred on 03 March 2026. He informed the Committee that, since 24 May 2026, the LNG carrier has been anchored at the following position: Latitude 32°42.299′ N and
Longitude 20°14.077′ E, approximately 8 nautical miles (NM) northwest of Daryanah and 18 NM north-northeast of Benghazi.
Following the discussions, the National Committee concluded that the LNG carrier no longer poses any risk to the Tunisian coastline or territorial waters. Accordingly, the Committee adopted the following recommendations:
- To repatriate the oil spill response equipment currently pre-positioned at the Port of Zarzis;
- To maintain the National Committee on permanent standby to ensure continuous monitoring of the situation;
- To develop an operational emergency response guide for marine pollution incidents;
- To review the Law No. 29-96 relating to marine pollution preparedness and response;
- To strengthen national preparedness and response capabilities through the organization of training sessions and specialized workshops.
