Regional Workshop on Building an Effective National and Regional Preparedness and Response Capacity

The Regional Workshop on “Building an Effective National and Regional Preparedness and Response Capacity” in conjunction with Oil Spill Response Equipment Demonstration were held; from 06 to 08 November 2018; in Elite World Hotel and Golden Horn-Halic in Istanbul-Turkey.
The event was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of the Republic of Turkey and in cooperation with Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) and MEKE Marine; MOIG members.
The main objectives of this workshop were :

  1. To reinforce and develop Sub-Regional contingency plans
  2. To enhance National and Regional coordination capacity
  3. To share information, lessons learned and best practices of the previous exercises
  4. To stay abreast of the newest technologies and benefit from Responders, Manufacturers and Academics technical expertise.

The first two days workshop programme included oral presentations hinged around five topics:

  1. Contingency Planning and Legal Requirements
  2. National and International Response Management Level
  3. Oil Spill Modeling and Training
  4. Oil Spill Response Equipment Industry and New Technology
  5. National and Regional Oil Spill Response Exercises.

We were very delighted with the outcome of this workshop, delegates had the opportunity to debate many issues of common interest and shared views, knowledge and experiences in how to enhance oil spill preparedness and response in Turkey and the Mediterranean region.
The third day event was dedicated to oil spill response equipment demonstration held; in Golden Horn in Halic-Istanbul; provided by MEKE Marine response team. The demonstration comprised a deployment in water of 200 meters fence boom, skimmer and fastanks and mobilization of tugs and boats. In addition, participants were afforded the opportunity to see the HAZMAT vehicles and a range of oil spill response and shoreline cleanup equipments.
